HONEYMOON IN PORTUGAL

This itinerary combines culture, romantic settings, a bit of ‘Real Portugal’ where little has changed in centuries, time on the coast, and new experiences together, but yet leaves you time for relaxing, enjoying drinks with wonderful views at sunset, moonlit walks, and dinners of very fresh seafood with chilled wine.

Here is a sample tour:

Day 1 - Arrival in Lisbon

On your arrival in Lisbon, we will welcome you at the airport and transfer you to your first hotel.  After time to relax, enjoy an afternoon / evening sunset walking tour that will give you a good feel for the historic center of the city and its neighborhoods. Take a ride on the historical Tram 28, admire the sunset from the hill of the castle overlooking the old town, wander through atmospheric Alfama at dusk, and then enjoy a rousing Fado performance in an old palace with a delicious dinner of Portuguese tapas and wine.

Day 2 – Lisbon

Tour the Belém district by Segway!  The Belém district is the part of Lisbon along the Tagus River dedicated to the explorers and explorations.  You will see the Monument to the Discoverers, the Tower of Belém, enjoy time along the river, and sample the fabulous custard pastries, undoubtedly the most popular Portuguese dessert.  In the afternoon, return to the center to explore the historic neighborhoods, followed by drinks at sunset overlooking the city.

Day 3 – Lisbon / Évora

Today you will collect the rental car, and leaving the capital, drive just 1.5 hours to the World Heritage town of Évora.  A World Heritage town, Évora lies in the countryside, in a region filled with fields of cork trees, olive groves, sheep and cattle, vines and vineyards.  It is a culturally and historically rich area, and it is known for some of the best food and wine in Portugal.

This afternoon, walk to explore Évora, climb to the top of the cathedral for a fantastic view of the surrounding countryside, and be sure to stop for a break overlooking the Roman temple!

Day 4 – Évora / Cooking Class / Monsaraz / Évora

Today, travel south of town, to a charming small village for a regional cooking class.  Here you will learn about the basics of Portuguese and Alentejano cooking.  After the morning spent in the kitchen, enjoy lunch of your creations. After lunch, make a stop to visit the tiny hilltop village of Monsaraz before returning to Évora. Originally fortified by the Knights Templar, this fairytale village still maintains its medieval atmosphere, yet is home to some 100-150 residents.  *If cooking is not your thing, you can do a bike or hike through the countryside with a picnic lunch!

Day 5 – Évora / Winery Tour and Tasting / Évora

Enjoy a tour of a wine producing estate, the wine production and cellars, followed by an oenogastronomic lunch with wine pairings in a spectacular setting beside the vines!  In the afternoon, return to Évora for some relaxing time together poolside.

Day 6 – Évora / Cascais

Today you continue to the coast, for your last stop, in Cascais.  This charming town, formerly a quaint fishing village, that became a popular resort and then refuge for the European nobility and kings in the 20th century, is today a romantic colorful town with cobbled streets, and lovely golden beaches.  Enjoy some time on the beach, then take bikes in to explore the town.  In the evening enjoy drinks at sunset on the coast, followed by a wonderful candlelit dinner overlooking the Atlantic.

Day 7 – Cascais / Sintra / Cascais

From Cascais, you can also visit lush green Sintra.  This fairy tale village is home to castles, palaces, lovely gardens, fantastic manor houses, and a charming village center.  It is one of the most romantic villages in Portugal.  From the Romans who named it “Cynthia” after the goddess of the moon, to the Moors who appreciated its lush microclimate, to the Portuguese royals who made it their summer residence, this charming town has attracted people for centuries.  Lord Byron, in the 18th century, wrote that the town is “perhaps in every respect the most delightful in Europe,”.  Apart from visiting the palaces and gardens, you can take a carriage ride through the old roads, and through the neighborhoods.  Return the rental car in the late afternoon in Cascais.
